For his portrayal of Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet committed to an immersive method acting approach by deliberately impairing his vision. The actor utilized specially designed contact lenses to realistically simulate nearsightedness. These contacts were intended to make the character's visual difficulties appear earned, moving beyond a simple costume effect.
To further enhance the illusion, Chalamet wore glasses with thick, myopic lenses over the contacts. Director Josh Safdie explained the technique involved using +10 contacts and -10 prescription lenses. This combination ensured that Chalamet would be unable to see clearly if his glasses fell off during scenes, adding a layer of realism to the character's experience. Chalamet himself described the sensation as being akin to looking through a "fishbowl."
