"I Loathe Clowns": IT Star Tim Curry Reflects on Iconic Pennywise Role

In a recent memoir, veteran actor Tim Curry, now 79 years old, has opened up about his experience playing the terrifying Pennywise the clown in the 1990 Stephen King miniseries IT. Curry, who is known for his roles in fan-favorites like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Clue, has confirmed the long-standing rumor that he "loathes" clowns.

However, Curry explains that his aversion to clowns was not to the extent that he "literally couldn't look at [himself] in the mirror," as has often been reported. Still, the thought of embodying the killer clown made him feel "simultaneously uncomfortable" and like he would be "pushing [himself] to take it on." Ultimately, Curry decided to accept the role, saying he was "interested" despite his contradictory feelings.

Curry also addresses the perception that he has not discussed the Pennywise role as much as his other well-known characters. He clarifies that this is not due to any "deep conflict" about the part, but rather because he simply "didn't revel in the role." While Curry has great respect for the Stephen King adaptation, he admits it was not exactly a "Stoppard experience" for him.

The actor also touches on the unusual experience of meeting people who have been deeply affected by his portrayal of the terrifying clown. Curry acknowledges that many fans either "revel in his evilness" or want him to know that he has "really traumatized them." However, the actor confesses he has never known how to respond to such reactions, as it's "not the most charming conversation starter."
