TIFFCOM: Japan's Culture Boom Fuels Global IP Adaptations
27 Oct
Summary
- TIFFCOM sees opportunity beyond anime and manga for Japanese IP.
- Japan's overall cultural popularity is boosting the film festival.
- New initiatives like Tokyo Story Market broaden IP adaptation focus.

The Tokyo International Film Festival's content market, TIFFCOM, is capitalizing on a surge in global interest in Japanese culture. Managing Director Kaori Ikeda highlights the burgeoning opportunity to adapt Japanese intellectual property, extending beyond the well-established anime and manga genres. This heightened interest, coinciding with nearly 43 million international visitors to Japan last year, provides a significant boost to TIFFCOM's activities.
TIFFCOM has seen a substantial increase in participation, with approximately 4,600 visitors and 300 exhibitors recorded in 2025, figures expected to be matched or exceeded this year. The market is expanding its seminar offerings, featuring industry leaders discussing topics such as AI's impact on storytelling and the global potential of Japanese IP. The Tokyo Story Market, now broadened to include remake rights holders from film and toy companies, exemplifies this expanded focus.
Recent successful ventures include TIFFCOM's collaboration with the Cannes Marché du Film, where Japanese IP was showcased for potential adaptation into films and games. The Tokyo Gap-Financing Market continues to connect partially funded projects with production partners, with one animation finding an international collaborator at the 2023 event and later winning a top award at Annecy. TIFFCOM will be held from October 28 to 30 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center Hamamatsucho-kan.
