The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced that Japanese-Korean director Mipo O and Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof will be honored with the Kurosawa Akira Award. Mipo O, recognized for her multifaceted perspectives on individuals at society's fringes, has previously won numerous accolades, including Best Director at the Montreal World Film Festival. Her recent return to feature filmmaking in 2024 with "Living In Two Worlds" and "How Dare You?" underscores her continued impact.
Mohammad Rasoulof, an acclaimed Iranian filmmaker, has persevered through censorship, imprisonment, and bans from his government, often utilizing guerilla-style shooting. His works, such as the Golden Bear-winning "There Is No Evil" and the Cannes Special Jury Prize winner "The Seed Of The Sacred Fig," highlight themes of human rights and oppression.
TIFF will also feature a special program showcasing Akira Kurosawa's favorite films, including works by Charlie Chaplin and Abbas Kiarostami, alongside restorations of Kurosawa's own films. Additionally, actor Hayato Isomura will lead the Ethical Film Award Jury.
