29 Aug
Summary
- Over 450 people dressed as tigers for Thrissur's pulikali.
- Women and children participated, marking a shift in tradition.
- Vibrant body paint and rhythmic chenda beats defined the spectacle.

Thrissur recently hosted a vibrant pulikali (tiger dance) spectacle, marking the culmination of its Onam festivities. Approximately 450 individuals, including men, women, children, and seniors, transformed into ferocious big cats for the procession. The streets around Swaraj Round resonated with the energetic beats of the chenda, as dancers executed dynamic, feline movements imitating tigers.
This year's event saw a remarkable surge in participation with nine teams, a contrast to recent years where financial constraints had led to declining numbers. Enhanced government allocations and support from cultural centers revitalized the folk tradition. A significant development was the increased involvement of women and children, with teams led by an eight-year-old boy and a ten-year-old girl, ensuring the art form's transmission.
The visual transformation of the dancers was striking, with bodies meticulously painted in vivid yellows, oranges, and reds, adorned with black stripes and spots to resemble tigers. Intricate facial make-up and elaborate masks further enhanced their fierce appearance. This dazzling display, accompanied by the powerful rhythms of the chenda and cymbals, created a captivating fusion of music, dance, and physical theatre.
Colorful tableaux and floats, themed from historical messages to contemporary protests, added another layer to the spectacle. The event was officially commenced by the Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, O.J. Janeesh, as the first team entered Swaraj Round, underscoring its cultural importance.
