Thailand Unveils Uncapped Film Cash Rebates
18 Mar
Summary
- Thailand offers uncapped cash rebates up to 25% for film spending.
- Additional incentives boost rebates to a potential 30% ceiling.
- Streamlined process includes 10-day permit approval and no cultural test.

Thailand is intensifying its efforts to attract international film and television productions by enhancing its national film incentive framework. The updated program features a tiered cash rebate system, starting at 15% for productions with qualifying Thai spending of THB50 million (approximately $1.54 million).
The rebates increase to 20% for spending between THB100 million and THB150 million ($3.08 million-$4.62 million), and reach a maximum of 25% for spending exceeding THB150 million ($4.62 million). Crucially, these rebates have no cap.
Further incentives include a 5% bonus for employing Thai nationals in key roles and an additional 5% for incorporating elements that promote Thailand's tourism or soft power. Filming in designated provinces offers a 3% bonus, with another 3% for completing post-production locally, bringing the potential total rebate to 30%.
The administrative process has also been simplified, requiring no cultural test and offering single-permit coverage for unlimited locations, with film permit approvals expected within 10 days. This aims to position Thailand as a premier filming destination in Asia.
Retina Film Production, a veteran service provider, offers comprehensive support for international projects in Thailand, managing permits, crew, and rebate applications. The Monk Studios, a leading animation and VFX house, is set to benefit from a separate 20% cash rebate for offshore animation and post-production work.
