Thailand's government is leveraging its film incentives to drive economic growth, prominently showcasing the HBO series "The White Lotus" at the Cannes Film Market. This series alone generated approximately $36.5 million in local production spending and led to a remarkable 300% surge in travel bookings to Thailand. The kingdom's core offering is a substantial 30% cash rebate on production expenses, which has no spending cap and does not require mandatory inclusion of Thai content. This policy has attracted major productions like "Jurassic World Rebirth" and "Alien: Earth."
Beyond attracting international shoots, Thailand is also investing in its domestic industry, allocating $6.7 million to fund 86 local productions. A significant area of growth is the production of Boys' Love and Girls' Love series, with Thailand now producing over 55 percent of all such content in Asia and reaching audiences worldwide. Projections indicated this market would surpass $155 million by the end of last year.
Thailand's commitment to the arts is further evidenced by its strong cinematic heritage, including the Palme d'Or win for Apichatpong Weerasethakul's "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives" in 2010. Current filmmakers continue this legacy, with "9 Temples to Heaven" premiering at Directors' Fortnight. This year also marks 170 years of bilateral relations with France, which Thailand views as a gateway to the EU as trade negotiations progress.
