Fifteen years after the events of "The Handmaid's Tale," the series "The Testaments" is set to premiere in April 2026. The show delves into the lives of young women in the dystopian theocracy of Gilead, exploring their coming-of-age stories. Newly released images offer a glimpse of Agnes and Daisy, June's daughters, now grown, alongside other young women navigating their bleak future. These women, who have known only Gilead's indoctrination, face lives of servitude and marriage, prompting them to seek allies in their fight for freedom.
The narrative, inspired by Margaret Atwood's novel, shifts focus to a new generation within Gilead. Showrunner Bruce Miller described the series as being about "Mean Girls growing up in Gilead," highlighting the energy of young women told they have power, only for it to be taken away. This perspective emphasizes the internal struggles and external pressures faced by these young women as the country attempts to shape them into something "awful."
While the story is no longer solely from June's viewpoint, Elisabeth Moss, who reprises her role as June, confirmed that "June's story isn't over." Although her return is not yet confirmed, Moss expressed her love for the character and the world, suggesting potential future involvement. The series is produced by MGM Television and will be available on Hulu and Disney+.
