Summary
- Howard claims producer Joel Silver threatened him over his attitude.
- He believes his aggressive nature contributed to losing the Iron Man part.
- Denzel Washington advised him to open his hands for opportunities.

Terrence Howard, the first actor cast in 2008's Iron Man, suggests his own anger contributed to his departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Howard, who played James "Rhodey" Rhodes, was replaced by Don Cheadle for the sequel. He previously cited pay disputes but now points to an incident at the 2007 Venice Film Festival promoting "The Brave One."
During the festival, Howard recounted a confrontation with producer Joel Silver, who reportedly warned him about his supporting actor status and perceived ambition. Howard admits he threatened Silver, a situation exacerbated by Silver's partner being Susan Downey, wife of Robert Downey Jr.
Howard later reflected on his career, acknowledging that his "aggression" and "need to be a man" cost him opportunities. He recalled Denzel Washington advising him to "open his hand" to receive opportunities, a metaphor for softening his approach.
Despite finding success on "Empire," Howard claims he is "blacklisted" by Hollywood after a lawsuit against Disney-owned 20th Century Fox. He feels he broke an unwritten rule by speaking out against perceived mistreatment.
