90-Day Notice for Ticket Price Hikes Upheld
28 Jan
Summary
- Court rejected movie production's appeal on ticket price hike disclosure.
- A 90-day advance notice is now mandatory for any proposed ticket price increase.
- The ruling aims to allow timely legal challenges to price adjustments.

A division bench of the Telangana high court on Tuesday refused to grant relief to M/s Shine Screens India LLP, a movie production house. The bench directed the production house to approach the single judge concerning their challenge to a January 20 order. This order mandates that any proposed hike in movie ticket prices must be disclosed at least 90 days before a film's release.
Shine Screens had appealed a single judge's directive issued during a contempt case hearing. The single judge had taken serious note of the government permitting a ticket price increase for a recent film, allegedly violating court orders. Contempt proceedings were initiated against a special chief secretary for allegedly issuing orders to increase ticket rates.
The judge's directive aims to provide aggrieved parties adequate time to avail statutory remedies. By requiring a 90-day public domain notice for any future ticket price hike, the court facilitates legal challenges under Section 7A of the Telangana Cinemas Regulation Act. The division bench, however, declined to entertain the appeal at this juncture.
