Slum Teen's Poetry Shines on TEDx Stage

A 15-year-old from Pune's Lohegaon slum, Vaishnavi Gaikwad, recently graced the TEDx-Kharadi stage, sharing two original poems. These pieces, titled "Biryani" and "Soch," reflect her experiences and the everyday thoughts of her peers, focusing on joy and the pressures of student life rather than hardship. Her performance showcased talent emerging from unexpected places.

Vaishnavi developed her poetic skills through weekly songwriting workshops organized by the Paalvia Foundation and Bhagyashali Bhavishya Shiksha Foundation. Here, she collaborates with other young individuals, transforming their ideas into lyrical expressions. These sessions serve as a creative outlet, helping participants manage stress and articulate their feelings.

Despite her passion for poetry, Vaishnavi aspires to study science and become an engineer, viewing poetry as a vital tool for relaxation and self-expression. Her mother, deeply moved by her daughter's performance, emphasizes the importance of supporting children's creative endeavors, regardless of their background, a sentiment that resonates strongly within their community.
