Teen Actor Drives Tim Allen's Car on Set Despite Lacking License

As of November 13th, 2025, 19-year-old actor Maxwell Simkins, who plays Tim Allen's grandson on the sitcom Shifting Gears, has been enjoying some unique perks on set. Despite only having a permit and not a full driver's license, Simkins has been given the opportunity to drive Allen's actual car in several episodes.

Simkins explains that while he doesn't consider himself a "car fan," he's been able to appreciate the vehicles he's been able to work with on the show. Allen, who is 72 years old, has shown a lot of trust in the young actor, often joking, "Are you sure you know what you're doing?" when Simkins is behind the wheel.

Beyond the car-related experiences, Simkins has also learned valuable lessons about comedy timing from both Allen and his co-star Kat Dennings. He notes that they've taught him to slow down and not rush through the jokes, which has helped improve his comedic delivery.

While Simkins has enjoyed his time on the sitcom, he's also been working on developing his own screenplays, including a limited series based on a true story that he's hoping to get made. Looking ahead, the aspiring actor hopes to explore more dramatic roles in the future, in addition to continuing his work in comedy.
