Techno Pioneer's Health Battle Fuels Musical Rebirth

Ibrahim Alfa Jnr., a techno producer from Brighton with roots in '90s electronic music, has released a new album, Infinite Black Inside. This release comes after he faced significant health challenges, including a pulmonary embolism and two heart attacks. Confined to his home, Alfa focused on music, drawing inspiration from his experiences. The album explores complex harmonies, intricate drum programming, and jazz-influenced melodies, a departure from his earlier functional output.

Alfa's career has been notable for its challenges. He previously found inspiration while incarcerated, mentally sequencing footwork rhythms. His early life involved travel and exposure to diverse musical influences. After starting a promising career in Brighton's techno scene and launching labels, his path was disrupted by parenthood, grief, and drug charges leading to prison. A batch of old files led to his 2016 debut, Hidden by the Leaves.

Infinite Black Inside features a hybrid analog-digital production approach, allowing Alfa to actualize his creative impulses within a meditative atmosphere. The album's textures are distinct, with percussion and mutating synth patches creating an engaging soundscape. Tracks like "Latent" and "Inwards Reverse" showcase his experimental style, while "Ikoyi" evokes pressure and resilience through its blend of breakbeats, vocals, and ambient dub elements.
