Tatyana Ali Recalls Harrowing Childbirth Trauma

Tatyana Ali, known for her acting and activism, shared a deeply personal and harrowing account of her childbirth experience with her first son, Edward.

During labor, Ali reported experiencing what she described as 'obstetric violence.' She detailed how her birth plan was disregarded, and she was physically restrained. Despite her baby being close to delivery, medical staff attempted a difficult extraction using a suction device, which caused distress.

Ali ultimately requested a C-section, during which she claims a doctor performed the Zavanelli maneuver, pushing her baby back inside her. This dangerous procedure left her convulsing and subsequently led to her son being placed in the neonatal intensive care unit. A pediatric urologist later linked his difficulties to the traumatic birth.

Her experience has motivated Ali to advocate for greater awareness of the discrimination Black women face during pregnancy and childbirth.
