The iconic Taj Mahal is providing complimentary access to visitors from January 15 to 17, 2026, marking the 371st Urs, or death anniversary, of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. This special occasion, observed on the 26th, 27th, and 28th days of the Islamic month of Rajab, offers a unique chance for the public to experience the mausoleum without charge.
During the first two days of the Urs, entry is free from 2 pm until sunset. On January 17, the monument will be open all day. This period is significant as it permits visitors to view the tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal in the basement, an opportunity typically available only once annually. Restrictions are in place, prohibiting the carrying of religious flags, banners, posters, tobacco, and similar items.
The Urs celebration includes a series of traditional rituals. Day one featured the "Ghusl" ceremony, a ritual cleansing of the tombs. Day two involved the "Sandal" ceremony with offerings and prayers. The final day, January 17, is set to host qawwali performances, a mushaira, Quran Khani, and the "Chadar Poshi" ceremony, where a ceremonial cloth is offered to the emperor.
