Vorteks, a genre-focused sales outfit, has secured international rights outside of Taiwan for the upcoming psychological thriller, "The Evil Inside." Directed by Lingo Hsieh and featuring a performance by Joan Chen, the film is currently in post-production and will be presented to buyers at the Cannes Film Market.
The story is inspired by true events in Taiwan and centers on Ho Jen-Jen, a former celebrity known as "Golden Phoenix." After incurring substantial gambling debts, she disappeared. The narrative unfolds as she finds herself held captive in a facility where terminally ill patients participate in a lethal competition known as Death Bet, staking their remaining lifespans.
To secure her freedom and locate her daughter, Jen-Jen must participate in and win this grim contest. This acquisition marks Vorteks' first Asian title, expanding their portfolio of horror, thriller, sci-fi, action, and fantasy projects. Director Lingo Hsieh expressed excitement for global audiences to connect with the film's personal themes and raised questions.
"The Evil Inside" boasts a cast including Golden Horse Award nominees Jason King and Eugenie Liu, alongside Taipei Film Award winner Zin Yang. Jackol Kao of DaSun Pictures is producing, continuing a creative partnership with Hsieh on genre films.
