Taiwanese cinema has reached new heights, with local productions achieving record-breaking box office receipts for the first quarter of 2026. Grossing a cumulative $30 million (TWD971M), this figure surpasses the entire box office for Taiwanese films in 2025 and marks the highest first-quarter earnings on record. Taiwanese films now command over 58% of the total box office share for the current quarter, a significant increase from 4% last year.
The Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) is leveraging this success by showcasing 243 Taiwanese film and TV titles to international buyers at Filmart. The event features stars from upcoming productions, including "Addicted," a series about addiction and relationships, and "Haru And Tae," a film about an elderly woman and a mysterious creature.
Among the current cinematic triumphs is "Sunshine Women's Choir," a prison drama that has become Taiwan's highest-grossing local film of all time, earning over $22 million (TWD700M). Other notable local hits contributing to this boom include "A Foggy Tale," "96 Minutes," "Mudborn," and "Gatao: Big Brothers."
Further highlighting Taiwan's dynamic film industry, several other upcoming productions are being promoted at Filmart, such as the family drama "I Blew Out The Candles Before Making A Wish" and Taiwan's first single-shot horror feature, "Suffocation." Additionally, the documentary "I Dream Of The Ocean" and the restored classic "Connection By Fate" are gaining international attention.
