The Faculty of Music and Performing Arts at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) successfully organized a three-day workshop focused on the Tabla Playing Techniques of the Punjab Gharana. The event, which ran from January 19 to January 21, 2026, aimed to impart in-depth knowledge of this esteemed musical tradition.
Esteemed tabla exponent Ustad Fazal Qureshi, son of the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha Khan, graced the workshop as its chief resource person. He meticulously elaborated on the unique characteristics of the Punjab Gharana. Participants gained insights into the structure and evolution of 'peshkar,' the intricacies of rhythmic development, the precision of 'bols,' and the effective use of 'tihais.'
Ustad Fazal Qureshi enriched the learning experience with live demonstrations, showcasing the authentic playing style popularized by his father, Ustad Alla Rakha Khan, and his brother, Ustad Zakir Hussain.
