Summary
- Assi film struggles to cross Rs. 10 crore despite good word-of-mouth.
- Post-pandemic, Taapsee's films like Do Baaraa and Shabaash Mithu flopped.
- Experts cite changing audience habits and OTT content saturation.

Taapsee Pannu's latest film, Assi, is facing a disappointing box office performance, struggling to cross the Rs. 10 crore threshold despite positive word-of-mouth. This continues a trend of underperforming films for the actress since the pandemic. Previously known for critically acclaimed hits like Pink and Badla, her post-2020 releases such as Do Baaraa and Shabaash Mithu have seen significantly lower collections.
Trade experts suggest that a major shift in audience preferences post-pandemic is impacting film performance. They note that the rise of OTT platforms has saturated the market with content similar to that of mid-range films, leading audiences to prefer viewing them at home rather than in theaters. This changing landscape affects films across various budgets and genres, making it challenging for mid-range and low-budget movies to gain traction.
While acknowledging Taapsee Pannu's acting prowess, experts like Taran Adarsh and Suniel Wadhwa believe the genre and timing of releases are crucial. Vishek Chauhan points out that the supply of similar content on OTT diminishes the perceived value of theatrical releases for these films. Actor-producer Viveck Vaswani also commented on Pannu's unique career trajectory, noting her achievement as a solo lead heroine, but admitted disappointment with Assi's lack of audience in theaters, attributing it partly to the film's content and execution.
