Stallone's Bulimia Battle: An Obsessive Body-Worship Struggle

Veteran actor Sylvester Stallone, 80, has revealed his past struggles with bulimia, an eating disorder he experienced while preparing for physically demanding roles. During the 1982 filming of 'Rambo,' Stallone aimed for a more 'animalistic' physique, which escalated into a severe obsession with his body. He described this period as an 'obsessive body-worship kind of thing,' leading to bulimic behaviors where he felt unable to keep food down or intentionally purged.

Stallone's pursuit of extreme leanness reached critical levels, with his body fat dropping to 2.6% during the filming of 'Nighthawks.' This is significantly below the 'dangerously low' threshold of 8% for men, as classified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. The actor also disclosed periods of steroid use, which he felt were necessary but took a considerable toll on his health. Furthermore, years of performing his own stunts resulted in numerous injuries to his back, shoulder, and neck, contributing to his statement, 'I've abused my body.'

Beyond physical challenges, Stallone also shared his experiences with panic attacks, which began around age 36 and recurred frequently, sometimes preceding high-profile television appearances. He has also dealt with ongoing anxiety and a compulsion to leave crowded rooms. Mental health professionals have lauded Stallone for his openness, suggesting that the pressures of maintaining his image and career in the entertainment industry may have fueled his rigid routines and intense performance expectations.
