"Christy" Biopic Stumbles at Box Office Despite Sydney Sweeney's Star Power
10 Nov
Summary
- "Christy" debuted to just $1.3 million, one of the worst openings for a movie on over 2,000 screens
- Sydney Sweeney has had two other movies flop at the box office this year
- Black Bear, the new distributor, both financed and distributed "Christy" on a $15 million budget

In the weekend of November 10, 2025, the boxing biopic "Christy" starring Sydney Sweeney debuted to a disappointing $1.3 million at the box office. This is considered one of the worst openings for a movie that premiered on over 2,000 screens, according to Box Office Mojo data.
The poor performance of "Christy" comes as a surprise, given Sweeney's recent success in boosting the box office of films like "Anyone but You" and "Immaculate." However, the actress has also had two other movies flop this year - the Lionsgate crime film "Americana" and Ron Howard's "Eden" - raising questions about her drawing power with casual moviegoers.
"Christy" was financed and distributed by the brand-new Black Bear Pictures, making it the company's very first release. Despite the low box office, the distributor has mitigated some of the losses by selling the international rights. Industry analysts note that factors like competition from the hit "Predator: Badlands" and the challenges of marketing a character-driven drama for adult audiences could have contributed to the film's struggles.
Sweeney herself has acknowledged the box office disappointment but emphasized the movie's "impact" over its commercial performance. In an Instagram post, she said that if "Christy" gave even one woman the courage to take a step towards safety, then the project would have succeeded.
