An extensive cast has been announced for "The Custom of the Country," an upcoming feature film adaptation of Edith Wharton's classic novel. Sydney Sweeney takes the lead role, joined by a notable ensemble including Josh Finan, Louis Garrel, Matthew Goode, Rose Leslie, and Hugh Dancy. The project is being written and directed by Josie Rourke, with production currently in progress.
Sweeney will embody Undine Spragg, a determined and ambitious woman from the Midwest. Her character's journey involves ascending the social ladder of turn-of-the-century New York. Undine uses her ambition, will, and social maneuvering to challenge the established elite, often courting controversy along the way.
Studiocanal is providing full financial backing for the film. The studio will also oversee its theatrical release across its territories, including the UK, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, and Benelux. Worldwide sales will commence at the European Film Market in Berlin. Charles Finch, Monumental Pictures' Owen, and Studiocanal are producing.
Key below-the-line crew members have also been confirmed. Ruben Impens serves as director of photography, with Lauren Reyhani handling costume design. Laura Ellis Cricks is the production designer. Morag Ross and Nikki Gooley are responsible for makeup and hair, while Nina Gold is the casting director.
