The Sydney Film Festival is approaching, presenting an extensive program of 248 films originating from 81 countries. Among the anticipated cinematic offerings is a dark and revisionist take on the Robin Hood legend, starring Hugh Jackman in the titular role. This adaptation is being promoted with provocative taglines, suggesting a significant departure from the traditional heroic narrative.
Adding to the intrigue, the festival will feature a 'camp, bloody psychosexual horror' titled Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. This film, directed by Jane Schoenbrun, stars Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson, and delves into a 'blood-soaked world of desire, fear and delirium'. Other notable films include an adaptation of Albert Camus' novel and Australian director Adrian Chiarella's debut feature exploring gay conversion practices.
The festival also includes 'Leviticus', a body horror film about toxic beauty standards, and 'The Arab', which reclaims Albert Camus' story by giving a voice to the unnamed Arab victim. A special event includes a rare public appearance by acclaimed Australian filmmaker Peter Weir, who will deliver the Ian McPherson lecture in a free "fireside" conversation.
