Fleet Street, once a hub for a bustling market, is being revitalized through a public art project. The initiative, funded by the Swindon Town Council and the Arts Council, involves local artists creating five murals. These artworks are designed to celebrate the street's rich heritage, architectural features, and past uses.
The project is curated by Artsite, the organization behind Swindon Paint Fest. They aim for the murals to help Fleet Street confidently embrace its future. The transformation is intended to make the street a more vibrant and welcoming space that residents can feel proud of.
Swindon-based artists Caryn Koh, Ed Poster, and Dayna Baxter are currently working on the murals. Helen Salter, Artsite's public art project manager, reminisced about her childhood visits to the area, highlighting the community-driven nature of the project. Swindon Borough Council Leader Jim Robbins acknowledged past underinvestment as a contributing factor to the street's decline and expressed excitement for the project's role in brightening the area.
