Netflix Cancels Sweet Magnolias; New Series Greenlit

Netflix has officially canceled the romantic drama "Sweet Magnolias" after five seasons, leaving fans to bid farewell to the charming South Carolina series. The show, which concluded its fifth season on June 11, garnered a modest but dedicated following, earning 100 million views since its 2020 debut and appearing in Netflix's Global Weekly Top 10 fourteen times.

Despite the cancellation, there's good news for fans of the show's creative team. Netflix has greenlit a new drama series, titled "Ladies of the House," from "Sweet Magnolias" executive producer and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson. JoAnna Garcia Swisher is attached to executive produce and is eyed for a starring role in the new project.

"Ladies of the House," inspired by Lauren Edmonson's novel, will also feature three central female characters. The plot revolves around a wife and her two adult daughters who must confront business challenges, family issues, and relationship problems after the unexpected death of the winery's charismatic owner. This new series continues Anderson and Swisher's commitment to telling meaningful, female-driven stories.

The decision to move forward with "Ladies of the House" was made after the cast options for "Sweet Magnolias" expired on Thursday night, with the cancellation following on Friday. This move indicates Netflix's strategic approach to balancing cost versus performance, prioritizing new development when established shows maintain solid viewership but not blockbuster numbers.
