The S.W.A.T. franchise continues its run with "S.W.A.T. Exiles," a new series premiering September 25 on Starz. Showrunner Jason Ning, a longtime fan, aims to evolve the series beyond its established action. He was inspired by real-world challenges of integrating Gen Z into rigorous environments, leading to a premise where Hondo must lead a team of "underdogs."
This new generation of recruits, including a tech genius and a cop influencer, possess a different relationship with authority and service. Ning intends for the action sequences to reveal character, focusing on decision-making and emotional consequences. Shemar Moore returns as Hondo, now a bit darker and grumpier, grappling with a system set against him and a team that doesn't "jive" with his established methods.
Moore expressed excitement for the more serialized, character-driven narrative, noting the signature S.W.A.T. action remains but is enhanced by deeper storytelling. The cast features new faces like Ronen Rubinstein, Freddy Miyares, Zyra Gorecki, Lucy Barrett, and Adain Bradley, bringing diverse dynamics to Hondo's team. Lenora Crichlow joins as a commander and adversary.
Moore also reflected on his enduring career, including his gratitude for his role on "The Young and the Restless" and "Criminal Minds," seeing his return to the S.W.A.T. universe as a continuation of his passion for playing "superhero cops." He maintains a rigorous fitness routine at 56 to keep up with the demanding role.
