Swara Bhasker's 'Vagina' Headline Shock

Actress Swara Bhasker has reflected on her 2017 open letter to filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali concerning the film 'Padmaavat.' Bhasker stated her critique was rooted in the film's perceived implications regarding sexual violence, honor, and survival, especially within a society she described as experiencing a 'rape epidemic.'

During a panel discussion in New Delhi, Bhasker expressed her disturbance over the possibility that survivors might feel they don't deserve to live or that suicide was the only path to preserve honor. She recalled being particularly angered by a close-up shot of a pregnant woman's belly, interpreting it as a comment on the potential female fetus not deserving to be born.

Bhasker clarified that her response wasn't purely impulsive, as she took five days to process her emotions before publishing the letter. She also shared how a statement from her letter, intended to convey that women are more than their physical bodies, was misconstrued into a headline: 'I felt like a vagina,' significantly altering public perception.

Separately, Swara Bhasker married politician Fahad Ahmad in January 2023 and they welcomed their daughter, Raabiyaa, in September 2023. Her recent acting credits include the show 'Pati, Patni Aur Panga' and the film 'Jahaan Chaar Yaar' (2022).
