Australian band Swapmeet has officially signed with the Los Angeles-based label Winspear, marking a significant international milestone. This signing is the first for Winspear outside of the United States. Swapmeet, hailing from Adelaide, is set to make their debut at SXSW this March.
The indie group gained industry attention after a performance at the BIGSOUND summit in 2023. They have since supported notable acts and shared stages with various artists. Winspear founder Jared Jones expressed excitement, highlighting the band's distinctive sound and creative fearlessness.
Swapmeet, formed in the early 2020s, consists of Venus O'Broin, Joshua Doherty, Maxwell Elphick, and Jack Medlyn. Their music draws inspiration from the '90s alternative scene, reminiscent of bands like Pavement and Sonic Youth. Their debut single was released in late 2023, followed by the EP 'Oxalis' in mid-2024.
The EP 'Oxalis' received accolades at the SA Music Awards, winning best release and best song for 'Ceiling Fan'. Additionally, Swapmeet secured the Justin Cosby Music Prize for best emerging artist at SXSW Sydney 2025, praised for their raw, experimental, and energetic sound with a punk spirit. They are scheduled to perform at SXSW in Austin, Texas on March 13.
