Suriya's father, Sivakumar, has shared details about the beginnings of the actor's relationship with Jyotika, whom he married in 2006. Sivakumar initially disapproved of their union, but Suriya's strong insistence that he would remain unmarried if he couldn't be with Jyotika led to his father's eventual agreement. Sivakumar cited his own career, which featured many love marriage themes, as a factor in his change of heart.

Jyotika, who was establishing her career when she met Suriya, chose to step back from acting at the age of 28 after their marriage.
