SC Halts High Court Order on Film Ticket Price Hikes
13 Mar
Summary
- Supreme Court stayed a Telangana High Court order regarding movie ticket price hikes.
- The order mandated public disclosure of ticket price decisions 90 days prior to release.
- Mythri Movie Makers challenged the High Court's directions, citing potential impact on all releases.

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a stay on a January order from the Telangana High Court. This High Court order had mandated that the state government must make public any decisions concerning movie ticket price increases at least 90 days before a film's premiere.
The stay was granted to Mythri Movie Makers, a film production house that had filed a petition challenging the High Court's directive. The original High Court order was made while hearing a separate case concerning ticket rates for the film 'Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu'.
The apex court acknowledged that the High Court's directions could adversely affect movie makers and distributors. Their counsel argued that such orders could not be passed without offering an opportunity for representation, citing the Telangana Cinemas Regulation Act.
Notices have been issued to the state government, the Telangana Film Development Corporation, and the original petitioner from the High Court. The Supreme Court has adjourned the matter for further hearing alongside a similar case already under its consideration.
