- The medal commemorates American independence and France's role.
- The NFL chose the medal for America's 250th anniversary celebration.

A significant piece of American numismatic history is set to be highlighted during the Super Bowl coin toss. A modern restrike of the Libertas Americana medal, originally commissioned by Benjamin Franklin, will be used for the pre-game ceremony.
This silver medal, featuring Lady Liberty and commemorating American independence and France's aid during the Revolutionary War, has been selected by the NFL. The choice aligns with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The original medals were struck in 1783 by the Paris Mint, with a limited number created. The Smithsonian Institution, which houses several original medals, could not loan an artifact, leading the NFL to acquire a restrike from the Paris Mint.
Following its use in the game, the NFL plans to donate the medal to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Museum officials see this as a unique opportunity to connect with a national audience and reflect on founding ideals.
Ellen Feingold, curator of numismatics at the Smithsonian, expressed enthusiasm for the medal's prominent display, hoping it sparks conversations about liberty as a shared and enduring American value.
