Members of Sudan's prominent band Aswat Almadina, meaning "Sounds of the City," are now dispersed internationally, united by the hope that their music can inspire peace in their war-torn homeland.
The band's journey began in 2014, with their music reflecting the atmosphere and sounds of Khartoum. They quickly gained a devoted following, becoming known for addressing social justice and corruption, and were appointed UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors in 2017.
As the conflict escalated in April 2023, band members like Timon and Ibrahem Mahmoud were forced to flee Khartoum, traumatized by the destruction. Timon is now in Cairo, Egypt, while Ibrahem resides in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, after living in Nairobi, Kenya.
Despite the physical distance and the challenges of communication, Aswat Almadina continues to create music together remotely. Their upcoming song, "Sudan," aims to capture the nation's beauty and pain, offering a sense of shared emotion and a strong message of hope for peace.
