Jakob Nowell, son of Sublime's late frontman Bradley Nowell, considers the current iteration of the band to be the 'fourth era' of Sublime. This new phase is marked by the release of the album 'Until the Sun Explodes' on Friday, June 12. Nowell, who has led the band since 2023, aims to bring a renaissance to the group's sound and performances.
The 'fourth era' follows Sublime classic (1988-1996), Long Beach Dub Allstars (1997), and Sublime With Rome (2009-2024). Nowell Jr. initially grappled with his connection to the band's legacy, developing his own musical identity through projects like LAW and Jakobs Castle. A pivotal moment occurred in December 2023 during a benefit concert, which led to an overture from original members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson to revive Sublime.
Sublime's first new release in 27 years, the single 'Feel Like That' with Stick Figure, reached No. 7 on the Alternative Airplay chart. The 21-track album 'Until the Sun Explodes' features an expanded lineup and guest appearances from artists like H.R., G. Love, and members of Pennywise, Fidlar, and Skeggs.
While the album has achieved chart success with singles like 'Ensenada,' Nowell intends for 'Until the Sun Explodes' to be the final Sublime record. He plans to focus on his band Jakobs Castle and his record label, SVNBVRNT Records, to support emerging artists. Nowell views this as passing the mantle to a new generation.
