Subhash Ghai Blasts Star System, Favors Fresh Faces

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai, known for classics like 'Taal' and 'Pardes,' recently shared his perspective on nurturing new talent in the film industry.

Ghai explained his preference for newcomers, citing his own struggles in the industry and observing how established figures often rely on connections. He stated, "I have always been drawn to newcomers -- those who have hunger and humility, not attitude." He believes these qualities are essential for quality filmmaking.

Reflecting on Raj Kapoor's 'Bobby,' Ghai noted how the film's success after the failure of 'Mera Naam Joker' underscored his belief that filmmakers, not stars, are the true architects of cinema. He decided from then on to focus on his directorial vision rather than relying on established actors.

Ghai expressed his continued aversion to the prevailing "star system," observing that even minor actors now exhibit undue attitude. He asserted that a film is the director's creation and allowing stars undue influence compromises the script. He contrasted this with how newcomers, like Mahima Chaudhry in 'Pardes,' allow the script to guide the narrative, lamenting that commercial considerations now dominate the industry.

Looking ahead, Ghai indicated that a script for 'Taal 2' is in development, which he intends to produce with newcomers, echoing his past successful collaborations with talents like Akshaye Khanna and Aishwarya Rai.
