Strict Rules Govern Dancing with the Stars Contestants' Every Move

As the 34th season of Dancing with the Stars continues, a fresh batch of stars have taken on the challenge of transforming into ballroom dancers. However, these contestants must abide by a series of strict rules throughout their time on the show.

Firstly, after being cast, contestants are required to keep the news a secret until the full cast is officially announced on Good Morning America a few weeks before the season premiere. During this period, they must wear disguises or shield themselves to avoid being seen by the public while attending practices.

Another key rule is that contestants do not get to choose their dance partners. The show's producers make these pairings based on factors like height, size, and personality compatibility. As talent co-executive producer Deena Katz explains, "We are never ever going to try to pair people that we think won't get along. We always want the best pairing because we know them so well."

Contestants also have limited time to rehearse in their elaborate, custom-made costumes each week. Costume designer Steven Lee reveals that the stars typically wear their costumes for the first time "two hours before the show," with the designers sometimes working right up until showtime to make last-minute adjustments.
