The highly anticipated Stranger Things Season 4 finale, titled "The Piggyback," aired in July 2022 and saw the heroes of Hawkins facing off against the season's new villain, Vecna.
As Eleven works to regain her powers with the help of Dr. Owens, she realizes she must "piggyback" into Max's mind to confront Vecna directly. Meanwhile, the rest of the group sets a trap for Vecna at the Creel mansion in the Upside Down. Their plan is partially foiled by Jason and his friends, who catch wind of the group's activities.
In a climactic showdown, Eleven battles Vecna in Max's mind, but Vecna still manages to crack open the barrier between Hawkins and the Upside Down, causing massive destruction across the town. The event is perceived as an earthquake by unsuspecting residents, leading many to flee Hawkins.
Amidst the chaos, the heroic Eddie Munson sacrifices himself, staying behind to fight off the Upside Down's creatures and allowing his friend Dustin to escape. As the town lies in ruins, the reunited group of friends and family members face an uncertain future, with a foreboding storm looming over Hawkins.
