29 Apr
Summary
- A special issue of Cake Zine, titled Steak Zine, recently debuted.
- The publication explores red meat's symbolism and current perceptions.
- An event for Steak Zine was held at a New York City steakhouse.

A recent gathering in Manhattan celebrated the debut of Steak Zine, a new issue from the food-focused literary journal Cake Zine. Approximately 150 people attended the event at Funny Bar, a steak restaurant on the Lower East Side, paying $20 each to participate. Cake Zine, founded in 2022 by Aliza Abarbanel and Tanya Bush with designer Noah Emrich, previously explored themes through sweets.
Steak Zine shifts focus to savory topics, inviting writers to explore red meat's historical and current symbolism. Editor Aliza Abarbanel clarified that the zine is not an endorsement of eating red meat but rather a question posed to a range of culinary professionals and writers. Contributors include chefs, butchers, and vegetarian cooks, reflecting diverse dietary perspectives.
The event featured readings from contributors, including an essay about a mother's secret hamburger habit and deconstructed lemon meringue pies for dessert. Some attendees, like vegan Leah Abrams, opted for nearby vegetarian restaurants, including Superiority Burger, whose owner was a contributor to Steak Zine.
