Stage Set for Royal Secrets & Political Drama

Sydney Theatre Company (STC) has announced its 2027 program, featuring significant new theatrical works. A prominent production will be 'The Palace Letters,' adapting Jenny Hocking's legal fight to expose truths surrounding Gough Whitlam's dismissal. This play, starring Georgie Parker as Hocking and Jonathan Biggins as Whitlam, premieres at the Sydney Opera House in April.

The 2027 season is rich with new content, including four world premieres and six Australian premieres. Among them is Robert Icke's modern 'Oedipus,' casting Heather Mitchell and Richard Roxburgh, which will be staged in January and February before heading to the Adelaide festival. Comedian Celeste Barber is set to make her STC debut in 'The Book of Liz,' a comedy by David and Amy Sedaris, playing Sister Elizabeth Donderstock.

Further highlights include the return of STC's acclaimed "The Picture of Dorian Gray," directed by Kip Williams, with Nikki Shiels playing all 26 roles. Eryn Jean Norvill will also feature in "Vanya," an adaptation of Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya," which she will co-direct. Tim Minchin is slated to play Scrooge in Jack Thorne's "A Christmas Carol," directed by Matthew Warchus. The program also includes stage adaptations of 'Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries,' 'John Proctor is the Villain,' 'Becky Shaw,' 'Amah and Nanna,' 'The Fifth Step,' 'The Bookbinder of Jericho,' and 'Logan St.'
