Staunton's 4th of July: Storms, Delays, and Celebration
5 Jul
Summary
- Staunton's July 4th festivities faced significant storm delays.
- A record 189 participants joined the annual parade.
- Jimmy Fortune returned to perform in Staunton after 32 years.

Staunton embraced the nation's 250th birthday with festivities on July 3 and 4, centered in Gypsy Hill Park. The annual Happy Birthday America event, however, was significantly impacted by inclement weather. On July 4, thunderstorms rolled through, causing a nearly two-hour delay for the scheduled concerts at Moxie Memorial Stadium. Performers like SJ McDonald had abbreviated sets, while others, including Jack and Davis Reid, Wilson Fairchild, and special guest Jimmy Fortune, eventually took the stage once the storm passed and it was deemed safe.
Jimmy Fortune, a former member of The Statler Brothers, made a return to Moxie Stadium after 32 years, performing classic hits and original material to an enthusiastic crowd. The storm also pushed back the fireworks display, which finally lit up the sky around 11 p.m., sparking some public criticism regarding communication about the delays. Attendees expressed frustration over late announcements, especially for families with young children.
Earlier on July 4, the Firecracker 5K saw 456 finishers, with Jack Blemker and Erica Guengerich taking the top male and female spots, respectively. The parade itself set a new record with 189 participants. Despite the meteorological challenges and resulting delays, the cool temperatures brought by the storms offered some relief from the earlier heat, allowing the celebrations to continue.
