NCW Summons Stars Over 'Offensive' Songs

The National Commission for Women (NCW) recently summoned rapper Badshah and actors Sanjay Dutt and Nora Fatehi concerning songs that allegedly undermined women's dignity. This action was part of a broader effort to address lyrics and visuals in popular music deemed sexually suggestive or objectifying.

Specifically, the song 'Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke' faced criticism for vulgar and regressive visuals, leading to its removal from online platforms. Similarly, Badshah's song 'Tateeree' sparked controversy for its objectification of women and minors, prompting an apology and an edited release.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar emphasized that interventions target content normalizing objectification, not individuals. She clarified the distinction between artistic expression and content that disrespects women, aiming for responsible portrayal rather than censorship.

During their appearance before the NCW, the artists expressed regret and assured greater sensitivity in future works. They also pledged support for girl child education and women's empowerment, with Badshah and Dutt sponsoring girls and Fatehi committing to support orphan girls' education.

Rahatkar noted that meaningful societal change results from consistent efforts in education, policy, and media engagement. The Commission's assessments are guided by constitutional values, not just public outrage, to foster a respectful and inclusive society.
