Picard's Star Trek Uniforms: A Tight Squeeze!
7 Feb
Summary
- Patrick Stewart found the early Star Trek uniforms uncomfortable.
- Spandex costumes were designed by William Ware Theis and favored by Gene Roddenberry.
- New designer Robert Blackman altered uniforms to improve comfort and prevent lawsuits.

Patrick Stewart, celebrated for his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, recalled the significant discomfort experienced during the initial years of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The actor explained that the one-piece spandex Starfleet uniforms, designed by William Ware Theis, were excessively tight, requiring the cast to be "poured" into them.
Despite the cast's complaints, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry favored the sleek aesthetic of these costumes. However, following Theis's departure after the first season due to illness, new costume designer Robert Blackman introduced a more heroic look. This redesign not only improved the visual appeal but also addressed the practical issues and potential health concerns stemming from the original tight-fitting attire, safeguarding against legal repercussions from Patrick Stewart.
