A documentary titled "Stan Lee: The Final Years," directed by Stan Lee's former assistant Jon Bolerjack, is set to reveal details from the comic book icon's final years. Bolerjack captured hundreds of hours of footage before Lee's passing in 2018, which forms the basis of the film. The documentary explores allegations of elder abuse and disputes over Lee's estate, with Bolerjack stating his footage offers a firsthand account.
The film's existence, first unveiled in March 2025, garnered significant attention, leading to a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised nearly $85,000 towards its completion. Bolerjack estimates the total production cost at approximately $500,000, covering filming, legal fees, and post-production. He also noted efforts by an alleged perpetrator to block the film's release, necessitating extensive legal work.
Despite the heavy subject matter, Bolerjack assures the documentary includes lighthearted moments. He explained his motivation was to document the alleged mistreatment Lee endured, a decision Lee himself reportedly supported. "The people around him believed they were untouchable, and I felt a responsibility to document what was happening," Bolerjack stated, emphasizing his decade-long commitment to finishing the film.
Osmosis Global has acquired the distribution rights and is planning a release strategy. Audiences will have an early opportunity to view the film on June 27 at the Dances with Film festival in Los Angeles. This release aims to capture "water cooler moments" for an audience with a built-in fanbase.
