Costume designer Neeta Lulla has shared the fascinating inspiration behind one of Sridevi's most iconic looks from the 1993 film 'Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja.' Lulla revealed that the elaborate costume, complete with feathers and a layered skirt, drew its influence from Eddie Murphy's 1988 Hollywood comedy 'Coming to America.'
Lulla recalled that after watching 'Coming to America,' she was struck by its lavish costumes. Shortly after, Sridevi approached her for the film's song sequence. This encounter led Lulla to sketch a dramatic, larger-than-life ensemble featuring a feathered headgear and a gold-metal bodice.
The creation of the striking headgear involved meticulous sourcing from Mumbai's Crawford Market for feathers. Lulla intricately combined these with chain mail, rhinestones, and metal pieces. The demanding filming schedule for the song required constant maintenance of the elaborate costume throughout the day and night.
'Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja' was one of the most ambitious Hindi productions of its time. Directed by Satish Kaushik, the film starred Sridevi alongside Anil Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever, and Jackie Shroff.
