The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) is celebrating the commercial success of its alumni in Tollywood. Three former students have recently made significant waves, demonstrating the institute's growing influence on the Bengali film industry. Their achievements, ranging from widely popular films to critically acclaimed productions, highlight a new generation of filmmakers.
Abhijit Sen, already felicitated by the Centre, has seen consistent success since 2021 with films like 'Tonic', 'Projapati', and 'Pradhan'. Despite studying masters like Tarkovsky and Wong Kar Wai, Sen integrates their emotional depth rather than stylistic imitation. He also draws inspiration from classic Bengali filmmakers like Tapan Sinha and Bimal Roy.
Adding to the success, SRFTI debutants Annapurna Basu and Jayabrata Das are making their mark. Basu's 'Sharthopor' continues to attract audiences five weeks after its release, praised for its strong screenplay and 1960s Bengali cinema essence. Das's 'The Academy of Fine Arts', though divisive, has generated buzz and increased screen time for Bengali films, with audiences responding enthusiastically to its humor.
