Spy Director Fights for Rose Byrne's Iconic Hairdo

At the 2026 Nantucket Film Festival, director Paul Feig revealed a comical struggle over Rose Byrne's character's distinctive hairstyle in the 2015 film Spy. Feig was honored at the event, where Byrne praised his work and vision for women onscreen. During his acceptance speech, Feig shared how Byrne collaborated with the hair and makeup team to create an "elaborate and beautifully ridiculous" hairdo for her villain, Rayna Boyanov.

Studio executives found the hairstyle too extreme and initially refused its use. Byrne was ready to comply with the studio's decision, but Feig fought to keep the extravagant look. To appease the executives, Feig proposed a compromise: Melissa McCarthy's character would repeatedly make fun of Byrne's hair throughout the movie. This creative solution allowed the iconic hairdo to remain, adding another layer of humor to the action-comedy.

Feig encouraged fans to rewatch Spy and tally the number of times McCarthy's character comments on Rayna's hair, citing lines like "Oh, thank God your hair broke your fall." The director also briefly touched on the possibility of a sequel, stating he has a story idea but is currently enjoying exploring new projects.
