Bruce Springsteen has penned a tribute essay to the late Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan, praising his "flashing, alive and historically rich" songwriting. This essay accompanies the announcement of a new compilation album, "20th Century Paddy: The Songs of Shane MacGowan," set for release on November 13.
Springsteen's contribution includes his cover of "A Rainy Night in Soho." The album will feature a diverse lineup of artists, including Tom Waits, Johnny Depp, and members of The Pogues, with 50% of artist royalties designated for the Dublin Simon Community charity.
MacGowan, who passed away aged 65 in November 2023, is remembered for his distinctive voice and enduring songs, such as the Christmas classic "Fairytale of New York." This tribute album follows other recent posthumous honors, including a joint event at Carnegie Hall in March 2024 for MacGowan and Sinéad O'Connor.
