Summary
- New SpongeBob movie releasing on December 19
- Faces competition from Avatar: Fire and Ash
- Eyeing modest $25-35 million opening weekend

In just over a month, fans of the beloved cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants will be treated to a new movie adventure. "The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants" is scheduled to hit theaters on December 19, 2025, but it will face stiff competition from the highly anticipated Avatar sequel, "Avatar: Fire and Ash."
According to industry projections, the new SpongeBob movie is eyeing a modest opening weekend at the domestic box office, with estimates ranging between $25 million and $35 million. If the film lands within this range, it will record the third-lowest opening in the SpongeBob film franchise, behind the previous installments.
The story follows SpongeBob, who, eager to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs and become a "big guy," ventures into the deepest parts of the ocean in pursuit of the Flying Dutchman. The voice cast for the film includes George Lopez, Ice Spice, Arturo Castro, Sherry Cola, Regina Hall, and Mark Hamill, alongside director Derek Drymon.
The last SpongeBob movie, released in 2020 during the pandemic, had a limited release, only being shown in Canada and on 300 screens. The upcoming film marks the fourth installment in the SpongeBob movie series, and fans are eagerly anticipating its arrival, despite the competition from the highly anticipated Avatar sequel.
