Spielberg Reveals Bond Rejections
11 Jun
Summary
- Spielberg was repeatedly denied a chance to direct a James Bond film.
- He offered to direct Bond after "Jaws" and "Close Encounters" successes.
- Producer Cubby Broccoli refused Spielberg's requests for a Bond movie.

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg expressed his regret over never directing a James Bond film, despite multiple attempts to secure a directing role. He revealed that early in his career, after the success of "Jaws," he personally reached out to producer Cubby Broccoli to volunteer his services for a Bond movie.
Broccoli, however, reportedly turned down Spielberg's offer. Years later, after "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" became a major hit, Spielberg again proposed directing a Bond film in exchange for allowing the use of the film's famous five-note sequence in "Moonraker." Broccoli again refused.
Spielberg shared that he never understood why he was consistently excluded from the Bond franchise. He also mentioned that his discussions with George Lucas about these rejections led to the creation of the Indiana Jones series, which Lucas presented as a better opportunity than Bond.
