The political crime thriller "The Assassin(s)" by Director Hur Jin-ho debuted at the top of the South Korean box office during the peak Chuseok festival weekend, from September 25-27. The film earned $8 million from over 1.1 million admissions, capturing 40.9% of the market share.
"The Assassin(s)" reconstructs the events surrounding the August 15, 1974, assassination attempt on President Park Chung-hee, which tragically resulted in the death of First Lady Yuk Young-soo. The narrative follows a detective, a newspaper chief, and a rookie reporter as they investigate missing ballistic evidence that challenges the official lone-gunman verdict.
Other films also saw success during the holiday frame. "Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub" opened in second place with $4.1 million, followed by "The Odyssey" in its eighth weekend, which added $3.2 million. The collective box office gross for the weekend surged to $19.6 million, a significant rise from the previous week's $7.6 million, driven by the holiday crowds.
