Sophie Turner is fully immersing herself in the role of Lara Croft for the new Tomb Raider series, demonstrating her commitment by performing her own stunts amidst pouring rain during filming in Surrey. The actress, who recently turned 29, has undertaken nearly a year of rigorous training to prepare for the action-packed role.
Turner's preparation began in February 2025, involving extensive physical conditioning. She revealed that this demanding regimen, which included eight-hour training days five days a week, resulted in a persistent back issue. Despite these challenges, she expressed feeling well-prepared and enthusiastic about her collaboration with Amazon for this project.
The new Tomb Raider series is set to be a significant launch for Amazon Prime Video, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge serving as creator, writer, and executive producer. Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, noted that her previous experience did not prepare her for the physical demands of portraying Lara Croft.
She stated that her role in Game of Thrones primarily involved being "beat up, not the one doing the beating," and she is now learning "how to throw a punch." Turner is eager to bring her interpretation of the iconic archaeologist to life, acknowledging the legacy left by previous portrayals by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.
The series, inspired by the renowned video game franchise, will follow the adventurous exploits of Lara Croft. All six episodes are scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime on January 21, 2026.
